CRIStAL has set up a gender equality committee to promote the role of women in science and support them in their careers, improve the quality of life at work for all, and attract more young women to scientific careers. In 2024, women represented less than 15% of all researchers and teacher-researchers in the laboratory.
The committee’s activities:
- 100% parity lunches, a forum for discussion open to all on issues related to parity, inclusiveness and work/life balance
- 100% women’s lunches, for women to share experiences on all aspects of professional life
- peer-to-peer mentoring
- wokshops, training courses and seminars
- recommendations for recruitment, for team leaders, etc.
- awareness-raising on harassment, SGBV and discrimination
- creation of a reading corner with a selection of books
- provision of periodocal protection.

The commission also organises digital science discovery courses for young girls ( secondary school pupils) and a coding club (’Les Etoiles du numérique’ coming soon).
Internship for secondary school girls in third year
CRIStAL takes part in the scheme L codent, L créent & L décodent l’@venir and organises a week’s work experience in December each year for secondary school girls in the third year of secondary school.
The programme includes an introduction to creative programming using a laser engraver, unplugged workshops, meetings and testimonials from female computer scientists. The week concludes with a public presentation by the schoolgirls.

Internship for secondary school girls
We are offering a two-week course in June for secondary school girls who want to finf out more about the world of new technologies and computing. The programme includes an introduction to scientific research, programming workshops, visits to platforms and interactionwith researchers.
This course is particularly aimed at secondary school girls who wish to take the NSI speciality in Première.

New, back to school in 2024 - Les Pixelles
At the start of new school year, the CRIStAL laboratory is opening a all-girls computer club, ’Les Pixelles’, for secondary school girls in 4th, 3rd and 2nd year classes in the Lille area.
Every Wednesday afternoon from October to May, there are sessions on algorithms and programming, meetings with scientists, researchers and engineers from the lab, and visits to platforms (robotics, virtual reality) to learn about the digital sciences in a fun an friendly way. And time for a snock.
