In 2008, a new way of thinking about money was proposed.
As with e-mail and the Internet, which are not controlled by any authority and therefore lead to new democratic practices in communication between citizens, it seems that in the monetary sphere everything could work without and central control authority.
Bitcoin is the first version of this new type of digital currency. Still in the experimental phase, it is the subject of much criticisms and difficulties. However, it is enjoying growing success, generating unreasonable speculation and considerable electricity costs.
How does it work? What is a blickchain, on which Bitcoin is based but which can be used for many other things? What are we to make of this unexpected technical revolution?
The town of Villeneuve d’Ascq and the University of Lille are organising a conference-debate to provide food for thought and some answers and pratical illustrations.
