Flexible multibody dynamics provides physics-based tools for modelling deformable structures undergoing large motion and deformation. The talk first reviews my theoretical work on model reduction and the Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation (ANCF), a continuum-based approach that describes flexible structures using nodal positions and gradients. It then presents extensions of this research toward validated engineering systems and open-source implementation. The main focus will be my current work at Inria Lille within the SurgiSoft project, supported by the European Union through the ERDF and Région Hauts-de-France. This work focuses on implementing and validating ANCF beam models for interactive surgical simulation involving slender deformable structures. Several validation and dynamic contact demonstrations will illustrate the current implementation and its potential for future surgical simulation scenarios.
