Is the digital transition in higher education and research compatible with ecology?

on April 4, 2025

Is there a risk that the carbon footprint of the digital transition will explode with the rise of generative artificial intelligence? This question also concerns the higher education and research sector.

When it comes to the digital transition, the higher education and research sectors are far from lagging behind. Research already relies heavily on computing and dtorage infrastructures, communication networks that enable effective international collaboration, and teaching uses digital platforms on a daily basis. But is this massive digitisation compatible with the ecological transition?

In higher education, as elsewhere, digital technology has both positive and negative environmental impacts. Like other universities, the University of Lille is involved in this transition. This transition is put into perspective with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) during the week of transitions organised by the University of Lille. This is an opportunity to take stock of the links between the digital and ecological transitions.
