Devices and Techniques for Expressive Interaction with Musical Drawing in Extended Reality

The goal of this thesis is to explore the adaptation of 3D interaction devices and techniques for virtual and augmented reality to the specificities of expressive applications, such as performance and artistic creation. As opposed to applications dedicated to content production, these applications allow the production, during the interaction, of a sense or a feeling intended to make the interaction session attractive for an external observer. Currently designed immersive applications do not account for these needs and use generic 3D interaction techniques (selection, manipulation, navigation), focused on the efficient accomplishment of a task. The goal here will be to design and evaluate techniques maximizing variability in the interaction or the use of different granularity levels. The expressiveness of these techniques will be evaluated according to their appropriation potential by the artists and application conceptors as well as by their impact on the experience of spectators of interactions, notably through participatory workshops.
